I'm a week behind. I keep meaning to blog, but I haven't had the interest. Still, y'know. It's best that I get back on the horse and try to get back in the habit of daily blogging. Any who... Happy day photos from the past two weeks!</div>

I apologize for the messy jumble of photographs. Not the best collection I've ever made, organization-wise, but whatever the case, they depict many happy moments!</div>

This past weekend was the 2014 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. This year was four days of excitement, fun, fandom, and all of the good stuff that I look forward to every year. I ended up doing really well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was my booth on Sunday (pirate themed), with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/wendeltheskeleton" target="_blank">Wendel</a> having a great time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/r90/10312413_715386425192428_5968067962539162795_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/r90/10312413_715386425192428_5968067962539162795_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I got lots of great stuff.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10150591_715386721859065_5161237750173815881_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/10150591_715386721859065_5161237750173815881_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the whole weekend ended with me being the proud owner of a katana (twas a gift. It's not a good sword, but it's a katana, and I'm delighted by it). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-b-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t1.0-9/10176145_715415308522873_4995370870348938893_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://scontent-b-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t1.0-9/10176145_715415308522873_4995370870348938893_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://grimmfabrications.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">More photos and what-not on my Tumblr page. </a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, I'm still really tired (we slept until almost noon), so this blog post isn't terribly exciting or motivated. However, I had promised that I was going to do a blog about what booths and people I was excited about. I fell through on that (sad. Sorry.), so now I am going to link to different artists and people that I met, and what I found most exciting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://akumuink.com/" target="_blank">Akumu Ink</a>- T-shirts with cool designs. They're one of my all time favourite t-shirt companies. I grabbed their 'Dead Riding Hood' ladies tee.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://ragnaroth.com/" target="_blank">Ragnaroth</a>- 3D Printed items. I am the proud owner of one of their 3D Printed Fluttershy figures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/elleisamonster" target="_blank">Elle Is A Monster</a>- Portraits, buttons, and other bits of magic. She had these fantastic fandom themed floral crowns, and I grabbed one of her 'Ravenstag' floral crowns (pictured in the photo of me with my katana). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.wastedtalent.ca/" target="_blank">Wasted Talent</a>- Web comic by Angela Melick. I purchased a sketch from her (she drew my face!). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.blingsquared.com/" target="_blank">Cute Glass</a>- Amazing glass work. We traded items. My Game of Thrones hood went to a proud home, and I gave home to an amazing glass fox pendant. It's so cute! Not to mention the fact that the artists are some of the nicest people I've ever met.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.storyofthedoor.com/" target="_blank">Story of the Door</a>- Beautiful art. She designed these fantastic knitted scarves, and man, are they cuddly and warm. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://wolfcop.com/" target="_blank">WolfCop</a>- WOLFCOP!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://camilladerrico.com/" target="_blank">Camilla D'Errico</a>- She is probably the biggest name artist that I talked to and purchased art from. I decided to go with two small postcard sized prints, because otherwise I would have bought all of her art. It's so beautiful, and she seems like such a lovely person. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are probably way more people to check out... but that's all that I can think of for right now. I can't wait for next year! This year was unbelievable and surprising. Thank you to everyone who came out, enjoyed my work, and visited my booth!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Lots of selfies this week... Sorry about that... actually, kidding! I'm not sorry. I don't need to apologize. The last photo is my happy face, and I shouldn't feel any remorse for showing that off! Any who...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Comic Expo is in just a few days. It's going to be crazy. I still need to finish some things, and on Wednesday I have to go into school to drop off my grad piece and go to a grad meeting. Not really excited about that... but such is life. I think I'm just less stoked because the comic expo starts on Thursday, so I feel like I have better things to work on. Ah well! I'm excited. Yesterday I played around with display on one of our tables. Good news is, the comic expo tables are two feet longer than the table I was playing around with. Good news... otherwise I wouldn't have enough room for everything! Tomorrow I make a quick run to Staples and the dollar store (if they're open... Otherwise I'll go on Tuesday) to pick up binder sleeves and safety pins and stuff. So much to do! So little time! Butterflies with combat boots stomping around in my stomach and flapping their wings! Aaaauuugghh!!! Squeeeee... I am really excited. I think it'll be a good year. Soon I'll be posting about what I'll definitely be seeing at the Expo, and who I intend to meet. Akumu Ink and R.L.Stine are going to be there, and both of those entities are exciting! </div>

<a href="http://todayinpop.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/the_munsters_title_card.png?w=400" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://todayinpop.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/the_munsters_title_card.png?w=400" height="273" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the longest time, I only watched <i>The Addams Family</i>, and don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore <i>The Addams Family</i>. However, lately we've been watching <i>The Munsters</i>. My husband's parents gave the complete series to him for his birthday, and we've been plowing through. May I say that it's hilarious?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://rookery9.aviary.com.s3.amazonaws.com/15240500/15240642_e954_1024x2000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://rookery9.aviary.com.s3.amazonaws.com/15240500/15240642_e954_1024x2000.jpg" height="400" width="315" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In case you're unfamiliar, <i>The Munsters </i>follows an American family of monsters. All of the family members are based off of Universal monsters (Frankenstein's monster and the monster's bride, the Wolfman, Dracula, and so on). In many ways, it's very similar to <i>The Addams Family</i>, except that they actually are monsters, and there is some incredibly dark, subtle, humor. It's fantastic.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing that I really enjoy are the aesthetics of the show. Even the cover of the DVDs fascinates me. The colour palette is perfect, and is exactly what I want everything to be right now (I'm really interested in pastel goth right now), and the font used for the opening credits is fantastic (oooh dripping letters!). The costuming in the show is wonderful, particularly Lily Munster's clothing. It's all very wonderful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I recommend that you watch it. It's amazing. The writing is amazing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It makes me feel better about being a weird person. It's great.</div>

The stickers are printed, and fully cut out. Took me several hours of cutting, but it's well worth it. They're fantastic!</div>

These will be available at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, and I'll probably post them to my Etsy shop as well. They're all fairly large, printed in black and white on matte sticker paper. There's a ridiculous variety of designs, and I enjoy all of them. For Pirate Sunday, I have several pirate and nautical themed stickers that will only be there on that day. The stickers will be $2 each, 2 for $3, and 5 for $5. Watch out, kids!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like drawing. Drawing is a delightful way to pass time. Especially when it's bold, and graphic. Today I drew some sheets of designs that will be copied onto sticker paper, and <i>then</i> these drawings will become stickers. I'm excited about that. Because... y'know. Stickers are awesome. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm quite pleased with the drawings. They're mostly done using permanent marker, with a bit of ink for detailing and finer lines. For the most part, they're inspired by lowbrow art, nu & pastel goth, creepy cute, 90s revival, and satanic images. The satanic images are kind of tongue-in-cheek. I really like "satanic" imagery, but for the most part, I think that satanism is kind of silly. At least in terms of how it's approached in popular culture and media. That is another story for another time. Hurray! Sticker awesomeness! I'm planning to make one or two more sheets, including a pirate series. There are a total of 15 sticker sheets, and 3 of each should be good. Or I'll stick to three pages and do five pages of each. We'll see!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm pleased to announce that the official Grimm Fabrications website has been launched! Exciting!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The website is <a href="http://www.grimmfabrications.com/">www.grimmfabrications.com</a>. It's fancy, and makes me excited for the future of Grimm Fabrications!</div>
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3458104835930685791.post-3325654727176453242014-04-13T20:18:00.001-07:002014-04-13T20:18:20.598-07:00What you can expect from *the new* Grimm Fabrications<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hey, friends.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you may or may not know, Grimm Fabrications (that's me!) has returned from a several months long hiatus. During this time, I did some self discovery, and really considered what I wanted to do with my future, and where I wanted to take Grimm Fabrications. Now, without further ado, here is a brief list of what you can expect from me, and my beloved Grimm Fabrications.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>More illustration, drawing, and written projects. This will include things like zines, which I'm really excited about.</li>
<li>More wearables that I have carefully designed myself. Things like shirts.</li>
<li>Lots and lots of 90s revival stuff, nu goth, pastel goth, and lowbrow inspired art and clothing.</li>
<li>More videos.</li>
<li>Day to day updates about whatever I have made that day.</li>
<li>A stronger desire to involve myself with my "fans" (that's you folks, who follow me regularly. We can discuss a name by which I will call you. "Fans" is kind of weird. So is "Followers").</li>
<li>Updates on my research, inspiration, and everything that I'm working on in those regards.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Are you excited? I'm excited. I'm posting this because I want to make sure that everyone who was following me because of my hoods and fur things is aware of the fact that I'm changing direction, and moving away from my past stuff. I think that it's only fair. Hopefully, a few of you will stick around, and maybe even get more excited. We'll see!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Questions? Comments? I will respond to anything you send me! </div>

Adding a few things over the next week, particularly jewelry and collars. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Any ways, here are some photos of the patches that I made. They will be available at the Comic Expo!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm getting so excited about all of this stuff! By "stuff", I mean my artwork and wearable pieces and jazz! I can't believe so soon the Expo is... First the Expo, and then... the rest of my life, making cool things!</div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/f2JuxM-snGc" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lorde is a New Zealand teenager, who has taken the music world by a storm (wow... I sound like someone who works for MTV). I started listening to her after listening to<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmCJEehYtU" target="_blank"> Puddles' covers of her songs</a>. For a while, I wasn't terribly fond of the original songs, mostly because I was so in love with the 7-foot tall clown with the golden voice. Then, I started listening to Lorde, and all her songs just struck a chord with me. I like the hip-hop-like beats, her soft voice, and, ultimately, everything. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

She's also adorable. And I like how she dresses (mostly because it's how I'm trying to dress right now). </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back to the music. Her album 'Pure Heroine' is beautiful from finish to end, and all of the songs knit together nicely. Rather, they flow together nicely. It's a joy to listen to. The other day I bought the CD so that I could actually listen to it in the car. Sure, several of her songs are on the radio all of the time, but it's nice to listen to the songs on an album. I'm pretty sure that they're just meant to be listened to all at once. It's really lovely. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I made some horns. I've been interested in making horns for a while. I think that horns are really cute. I keep seeing them in the context of Kawaii, Sweet Lolita, and Dolly Kei fashions. I'm drawn to the pastel colours, pretty details, and just the fact they're horns. Of late, I've been thinking about creating a fawn character, and horns are an integral part of that. So far I have made six pairs, excluding two that didn't quite work out, and the first pair that I made for myself (which I will probably wear on the first day or two days of the Comic Expo). Each pair of horns will come with a mini-zine, giving explanation of how to wear, how to treat your horns correctly, and a few drawings of horned people. Along with the two pastel ones above, I have made two plain black pairs (one glossy, one matte), a pair that looks like glittery swampy marble goodness, and another pair of lavender ones that is smooth and has two types of ribbon on it. I'm kind of in love with all of them. Soon, I hope to learn how to cast with resin. That'll give me the opportunity to make sets of horns that are lighter, and less fragile. Which will be nice! In due time...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are a few images of Lolita & Fairy Kei with horns that struck up my inspiration. Just to give context. I've just been really into these kinds of Japanese fashions of late! </div>

Continuing with naming every day of the week! Or at least making each day have a theme that encourages me to write no matter what. Fridays are now Fandom Fridays, when I will write about what I'm geeking out over this week. This will be everything and anything that's making me act like a nerd. Not a bad thing. For the next few weeks, I'll be trying to curb my enthusiasm a bit, and ebb my excitement. Why? <i>THE COMIC EXPO IS IN THREE WEEKS! So....</i> I'm going to try to tone it down, so that when I write a Fandom Friday post, it won't be <i>AHMAGAD THE COMIC EXPO IS SO SOON AND I CAN'T STAND IT!! </i>every. Single. Week. Any ways. Now you know that I'm excited. And we can get on with our lives.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday, my husband, myself, and a group of my husband's friends went to see <i>Captain American: Winter Soldier</i>. It was the premier night (midnight showing! At... 8:30 PM...?), and my husband and his friend dressed up as Captain America and Winter Soldier (respectively). I even styled my hair to have Victory Rolls (it took me four tries). A three year old boy recognized them, and lots of people asked for their photos. Which is just fantastic. It was a fun night, and man. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What. An amazing movie.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't consider myself to be a Marvel fan. I don't really read the comics, and for a while, the movies struck me as okay. Watchable, but nothing amazing. Ultimately, superhero movies aren't my favourite, just as superhero comics aren't my favourite. However, Marvel movies are just getting better, and better. I started to really love them after <i>Iron Man 3</i> and <i>The Avengers</i> (fun fact: I just saw <i>The Avengers</i> for the first time on Tuesday). <i>Captain America: Winter Soldier</i> was absolutely incredible. I think what I like about Marvel's movies is that they don't feel like superhero movies. The characters are well-developed. Nothing feels forced. The fact that people have super powers is kind of incidental, and it doesn't feel unnatural to the world that's being created. It's nice to see that, and have that feeling. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Any ways, I'm not going to talk much longer about this (it's tired, and I think I'm ready for bed), but I will say that if you haven't seen any of the Marvel movies, get out and start watching them. <i>Guardians of the Galaxy</i> comes out this summer, and I think it's going to be absolutely amazing (I'm in the process of making a Rocket Raccoon costume). So excited. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Go watch Captain America. Right now. Please. If you want to.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*nerdity*</div>

I've decided that I need to get back into the habit of blogging every day. Thus far, I've been really bad at that. In order to get myself blogging, I've decided to do daily prompts to ensure that I blog about something. At the moment, these will be the internet-wide things like 'How Tuesday' and 'Throwback Thursday' and so on. That being said... Throwback Thursday! The day on which I will discuss past artwork from previous lives, or just the past in general! (Speaking of, today is 1950s Rockabilly day. Not officially... but as I write this I am wearing hair curlers.) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, I am going to tell you about something that I did when I was in my last year of high school. All the way back in 2010 (wow!). For a long time I was really interested in singing, playing guitar, and writing music. I wrote a lot of songs, and would play my guitar every day. I used to have some wicked calluses on my fingers because of this. In 2010, I learned about an indie record label in Regina called 'Urban Planning Records'. To be honest, I don't know if they exist anymore, because I couldn't find anything last time I was looking. I sent them a demo, and a bunch of t-shirt designs (I was also into designing band t-shirts at the time). They were basically just recording out of their basement, and they were a great bunch of guys. One of the most rock and roll experiences of my life to date (kidding... but for an 18 year old from a small town, my mind was blown). We recorded four of my songs, full band and everything, and it was amazing. All of this was recorded under a name that I came up with in Physics class: Gravity Kills Children.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe seamless="" src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=105971021/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/transparent=true/" style="border: 0; height: 470px; width: 350px;"><a href="http://gravitykillschildren.bandcamp.com/album/clever-alice">Clever Alice by Gravity Kills Children</a></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why am I writing about this? Well, after I left high school, I played guitar less, and less, and less... Until I stopped. Recently, my fingertips and the fringes of my soul have been itching to feel those metal strings, the wood body, and frets. Today I picked up the guitar again. And it's amazing. I listened to these old songs of mine, because naturally I don't remember any of the lyrics. Well... barely. Maybe it's just time to write new songs. Either way... my soul is satisfied. </div>

I'm carrying this over from my previous blog 12 Months of Alice. A couple of weeks ago, I started a photography project called <a href="http://100happydays.com/" target="_blank">'100 Happy Days'</a>. The object is to capture a moment in the day, or something in that day, that made you happy. Even just a little bit happy. In doing this project, I actually have been finding myself feeling more happy, a little less stressed, and just embracing life's little pleasures. Any ways, I've decided to post a week's worth of photos every Sunday. This will be a glimpse into my day to day life, and all the good things. Though I don't think I'll describe the photographs. However, the photos will be in order of the days. Now, without further ado, here are happy days 18 to 25.</div>

It took me a while to actually do this, but I am finally motivating myself to blog again. Over the next few days, I'll be posting photos from each of the shoots that I did on the 15th. All of the white tank tops are hand-sewn and hand-printed by yours truly. They are made out of a soft, sheer, poly-cotton knit jersey. The individual designs are all hand-drawn using India ink (for detail and description, <a href="http://grimm-fabrications.blogspot.ca/2014/03/shirts-part-2.html" target="_blank">go to this past blog post</a>. The patch on the back of the jacket is printed in the same way, but printed on canvas. All of the jewelry included in the shoot will be photographed and shown in detail very soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm quite pleased with all of these photos. Recently I've been really influenced by 90s grunge and revival fashion, 1970s horror, and witchiness in general. A whole lot of grunginess. For the photos, I wanted something dark and edgy, and I couldn't be more pleased by the photos that ended up looking like damaged film photographs (just look at that beautiful haziness and photo grain!). This is definitely how I want all of my shoots to look. I'm thinking that I'll try to re-photograph everything when it's a bit warmer. It'll be nice to photograph this stuff when it's warmer than -3. The weekend of the 15th was nice... but in the foothills and in the shade, it tends to get a bit chilly. Even so... I'm delighted with these photos.</div>

All items will be available in my Etsy shop very soon.</div>

I was browsing on Tumblr, looking for inspiration. During this time, I had an epiphany.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/1975080_696122663785471_342330754_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1.0-9/1975080_696122663785471_342330754_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This could mean lots of things. Whatever the case, I now feel motivated to draw and be creative. Time to draw. Lots and lots of drawing.</div>
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3458104835930685791.post-46358026263050122802014-03-22T18:48:00.000-07:002014-03-22T18:48:50.997-07:00Calgary Gideon Keys<div style="text-align: justify;">
Weird stuff alert! Weird stuff alert!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So. I live in Calgary. Home of the Calgary Stampede. A fairly benign, boring, city. Not that different from other cities. Based on this, what could <i>possibly</i> be this 'weird stuff' that I'm alerting you of?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/ZQ2zBB3-vGs/mqdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/ZQ2zBB3-vGs/mqdefault.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 'weird stuff' is what I am currently researching for future projects. The collection of notes referred to as The Calgary Gideon Keys. This notebook is also referred to as Calgary's 200 Phenomena. The story goes that this mysterious notebook was discovered at the University of Calgary. Upon reading it, the person who found them discovered that the book was full of.... strange secrets. A while ago, someone transcribed the notes and placed them online. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will tell you. The stories are beyond strange. I'm going going to go into great detail here, but if you're interested, you can read the transcribed notes <a href="http://gideonkeys.wikidot.com/calgary-keys" target="_blank">HERE</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My husband told me about the Gideon Keys a year or so ago. At first, the stories genuinely creeped me out. That's just what they are. Creepy. Creepy because of the immense subtlety and detail... Creepy because they just could be true. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been researching and reading the Gideon Keys. I'm planning to base some projects on them. However, to really do this... I feel like I should investigate some of them. See if I can discover any truth to the secrets. This terrifies me. Now, as far as anything supernatural, or paranormal, I'm hugely skeptical. Deep down, I feel like I've had paranormal experiences, but my brain brushes it away, assuring logical explanation. Still, that doesn't remove my immense curiosity. Thus my desire to investigate all things paranormal. Even then... do I really want to find out hidden truths? What might I stumble upon? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ha. Craziness. But seriously. Some of the stories are well worth having projects based on them.</div>

I am going to fulfill my responsibility to myself. That is, I am officially combining all three of my blogs into one blog. From this day forward, I will only be using this blog. That means everything. I mean, that's honesty, right? Not hiding or separating out aspects of my life? I'm not dividing up topics for me. I'm doing it for other people... and I doubt that other people care. So, without further ado...</div>

Here is my blog. The Grimm Fabrications blog.</div>

<a href="https://31.media.tumblr.com/d6dd8e34a5b268cea66e914244753bf9/tumblr_n2ghkdDYtc1rz6e7ro1_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://31.media.tumblr.com/d6dd8e34a5b268cea66e914244753bf9/tumblr_n2ghkdDYtc1rz6e7ro1_500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
How to properly prepare for a photo shoot.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Make a list.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Re-write list, ensuring that you're not forgetting anything.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. Review and re-write list (again) after someone reminds you about something.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. Make cupcakes as a thank you to people who are being kind and helping you out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
5. Follow your list and pack everything neatly into a suitcase.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
6. Hastily finish up details for things to make sure that your shoot won't be lacking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
7. Double check.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
8. Go to bed far too late because you were watching a very riveting season finale.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
9. Almost forget to pack your makeup kit and hairstyling stuff, and stuff that in your bag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
10. Go to bed, to ensure a well-rested artist and model.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Photo shoot tomorrow! I'm so excited! Photos are going to start coming soon!</div>

Ready to hear more about the shirts? I'm quite pleased about these shirts, and I will go through each one in detail. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'll start with one stand-alone t-shirt. It is part of the Bone Orchard collection. I say 'stand alone' because it's the only shirt in this collection as of now. <i>[Side note: The collections are more or less on going, so more stuff will be added. It's mostly just a way of me grouping like themes and ideas. That's why I say 'as of now'.] </i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/1901202_689887261075678_1899907504_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/1901202_689887261075678_1899907504_n.jpg" width="265" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This shirt is inspired by (and heavily based on) a group that was formed in 1896. It was called 'The Society for the Prevention of Being Buried Alive'. The society was formed because of how regularly people seemed to be buried alive. Such a fate was surprisingly common, and... well, that's not very nice. I learned about the society when I was researching people who were buried alive in the 19th century. As medicine and embalming became more advanced and more common, the risk of burying someone alive became less common. Thankfully. If you're interested in learning more about people who were buried alive, I recommend reading <a href="http://listverse.com/2010/02/02/10-horrifying-premature-burials/" target="_blank">this Listverse list about it</a>. It's concise and very informative. Why did I make a shirt about this? Well, the collection 'Bone Orchard' is based on Victorian ghost stories and graveyards. Unfortunately, premature burial is a big part of that. I'm quite pleased with this shirt, because the printing ended up looking like a worn down and weathered epitaph. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next, shirts for the 'Chiromancy' collection.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/1891032_689886601075744_1690258664_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/1891032_689886601075744_1690258664_n.jpg" width="194" /></a><a href="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t1/1185417_689886691075735_1141881828_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/t1/1185417_689886691075735_1141881828_n.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm quite pleased with these. They are both inspired by aspects of the history of witchcraft. If you've been following this blog for a while, you might know that it's a topic that interests me quite a bit. In general, most of the work that I create for this collection are inspired by the more arcane aspects of the history. I read a lot, and then I draw inspiration from it. The name for the collection on a whole ('Chiromancy') is another word for fortune telling, specifically palm reading. It's a fascinating word, and fit the overall feel that I wanted to instill through the Any ways... the descriptions of the shirts.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The shirt on the left is the Haxan shirt. It is based off of the 1922 silent film that documents the history of witchcraft. I was inspired by a combination of the film itself and runes. I decided to create a design that was runic, and it ended up making me think of pyres and stakes. Ultimately, I just had the intention of creating a neat design. Ultimately, it's almost like a Rorschach pattern in that you can see whatever you want. The shirt on the right is an untitled shirt that I designed a few months ago. The pattern is made up of a mirrored image with two crescent moons and fauns. All of the symbolism involved are symbols of the feminine and purity. I was inspired by the women of Salem who were blamed for witchcraft. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As of now, there are only three of each shirt (except for the Haxan design. I'll get to that later). Each shirt is hand printed on soft jersey knit fabric. They're fairly sheer, really light, and... yes, really soft. They are wrinkled, worn down a bit, and each printing is different (because that's what happens when you print). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Where do I go from here? Well, I will be starting my summer project (and hopefully beginnings of like projects for the indeterminable future). It will be a project that involves a lot of research, a lot of writing, maybe some artist journals, hopefully a great deal of traveling, and the result will be a run of printed, painted, and/or embroidered shirts. My plan is to make a series of shirts based on weird things in different cities. Occult history, famous oddities, strange places and people, so on. I'm planning to start with Calgary and Banff. After that, I would like to stem into Salem, Massachusetts, and Savannah, Georgia. I'm excited about this idea.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
P.S. There's a bonus in these photographs. The fur collars. They are more examples of the collars that I have been working on. I'm really pleased with them.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First run of shirts are done! This first set of shirts are just a limited edition, because I want to see how they'll do, and so on. I'm going to post mock-up photos of the shirts being worn tomorrow. The top two designs are part of the Chiromancy collection, and the last one (Society for the Prevention of Being Buried Alive) is part of the Bone Orchard collection. I'm quite pleased with all of them. The fabric is a really soft and fairly sheer jersey. It's lovely. If I keep one of these shirts for myself, I am going to wear it for the rest of my life. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
More information about the individual designs tomorrow!</div>
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3458104835930685791.post-76080022586850141922014-03-06T21:13:00.003-08:002014-03-06T21:13:45.328-08:00Fur Collars<div style="text-align: justify;">
Designing new things, and it feels good. School constantly makes me feel discouraged from doing art. Then, I do something different, something desired, and I feel better. Today, I made some fur collars. I've been really interested in the idea of detachable fur collars. In general, I'm really inspired by Gothic Lolita and Dolly fashions. Here are a couple of images that capture what I've been inspired by. Fur collar wise.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://s.tidebuy.com/images/product/1/1814/1814970_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://s.tidebuy.com/images/product/1/1814/1814970_1.jpg" height="400" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://froufro.us/blogimg/egl/fawnfur01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://froufro.us/blogimg/egl/fawnfur01.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm particularly enjoying the idea of the fawn fur collars. Not real fawn, of course. But it's so adorable, and absolutely lovely. I'd like to make some with fawn faux fur once I can get my hands on some, but for now I'm making some with solid colour. It's another way to use up left over faux fur that I have from making hoods. I'm planning to make between four and six for the Comic Expo. For some reason, I'm really loving the idea of fur collars plus a long tank top and leggings for summer. Does that sound like a summer look? Maybe it's just something that I would wear because I'm weird and I live in Calgary. I'll be incorporating the collars into the photo shoot that's coming up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Any ways... Behold! One of the collars that I made! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/10208_687894944608243_1207142872_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/t1/10208_687894944608243_1207142872_n.jpg" width="310" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is black faux fur, lined with black satin, and topped off with a nice wide black satin ribbon. They're fairly large, and I find them to be quite cozy. Kind of like a really, really, small cape thing. Today I made two. You can see the other one <a href="http://grimmfabrications.tumblr.com/post/78807182704/today-i-designed-some-collars-ive-been-wanting" target="_blank">on my Tumblr page</a>. I'm looking forward to making more. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And yes, I'm really digging black lipstick when I photograph my wearable pieces. It's kind of becoming a trademark in a way. I feel really confident when I wear black lipstick in my photographs. It's somehow secretive. And of course, it's witchy. Any ways. Enough about me and my embellished face.</div>

This morning I got some printing done. For my first run of shirts, I'm not making that many, because I want to see how they'll do before diving in and printing too many. I'd rather have too few than end up having dozens and dozens sitting around. I ended up printing some patches as well as shirts. That way if someone likes the design but doesn't want to "commit" to a t-shirt can buy a patch for less. </div>

I like printing. I like the process, and how the finished product looks. </div>

Now we're counting down to the Grimm Fabrications March 2014 photo shoot! Then there will be amazing photographs of all of the new shirts and everything fantastic that's coming up. I'm so excited for so many things! </div>
